Notre Dame Gets Good News at Receiver

Promising freshman receiver Joey Getherall will return to the Notre Dame lineup Saturday against No. 19 Stanford after spraining his right knee in the season opener.

Getherall has earned something rare, becoming the first true freshman starter on opening day since Mike Kovaleski in 1983.

Fresno State racked up a school-record 12 sacks and quarterback Billy Volek threw three touchdown passes as the Bulldogs defeated Utah, 27-13, in a Western Athletic Conference game at Fresno. . . . Boise State linebacker Andre Griffin and wide receiver Jerome Reed were charged with felony burglary for allegedly breaking into The Bon Marche on Sept. 21 in Boise, Idaho, and Coach Houston Nutt has kicked both off the team. A third player, Damon Bouie, was suspended for the season. . . . Southern Methodist sophomore defensive end Karon Riley has been suspended for Saturday’s game against New Mexico for misusing the athletic department’s long distance telephone code. . . . Baylor fullback Anthony Overstreet will sit out three or four weeks because of a broken rib. . . . Brigham Young will hold a moment of silence before tonight’s game against Utah State to honor Cougar defensive back Terrence Harvey, who was killed in an auto crash this week.
