Villa Park Advances in Water Polo Tournament

Senior Nick Pacelli scored with 32 seconds remaining in double overtime to lead Villa Park to a 10-9 victory over Riverside Arlington in a quarterfinals of the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament Friday.

Pacelli finished with four goals. Senior Kyle Baumgarner scored three for the eighth-ranked Spartans (9-5).

Villa Park will host Bell Gardens in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. today.

In other tournament games:

No. 6 Capistrano Valley 10, No. 5 Laguna Beach 9 (OT)--Ryan Keating scored the winning goal in overtime for Capistrano Valley (10-4). Keating scored three goals for the Cougars. The Cougars will play Santa Margarita in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. at Villa Park.

No. 9 Santa Margarita 10, La Canada 6--Chris Ansevin scored four goals in Santa Margarita’s quarterfinal victory.

No. 1 San Clemente 5, No. 2 Foothill 4--San Clemente (7-2) got back-to-back goals with 1 1/2 minutes left in the game to win. Pat Wong scored the winner with 37 seconds left and Josh Hewko tied the score 35 seconds earlier. Matt McPherson had two goals to lead Foothill (6-2).

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

No. 6 Irvine 23, No. 5 El Toro 36--El Toro (0-2) senior Danny Lee finished first and shattered the course record at Irvine High by 18 seconds, with a time of 14:41. The previous record for the three-mile course was 14:59, set by Irvine’s Rob Satterwhite in 1981.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 20, Mater Dei 37--Mission Viejo’s (1-0) Mark Gleason finished first in a time of 15:10 to set a three-mile course record at Fairview Park. Gleason, a senior, broke Capistrano Valley’s Alberto Sanchez 1995 record of 15:17.

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

No. 3 Irvine 25, No. 9 El Toro 30--Irvine (1-0) swept the top three places in its Sea View League opener against El Toro (1-1). Junior Erin Zehntner finished first in 18:01.

In the South Coast League:

No. 2 Mission Viejo 17, Mater Dei 46--April Lopez (18:22) took first place for Mission Viejo (1-0), breaking a course record at Mater Dei. The Diablos placed four of five runners in the top five against Mater Dei (0-1) at Fairview Park’s three-mile course.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

No. 2 Dana Hills 17, Marina 1--Margaux Pierog and Kelly Field, the No. 1 doubles team for host Dana Hills (7-1), dominated play against Marina (3-5) in winning, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1..

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 14, El Toro 4--Jenny Bailey and Leigh Ann Merryman, the top two singles players for Capistrano Valley (7-1), both swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 6 Newport Harbor 10, Santa Barbara 8--Newport Harbor (4-3, 0-1) struggled to defeat host Santa Barbara, ranked second in Division II. The Sailors’ No. 1 doubles team of Audra Adams and Brooke Taylor swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

Valencia 10, No. 10 Garden Grove 8--Beth Leverett swept her singles matches, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and the doubles team of Cherie Angeloni and Michelle Angeloni also won its matches, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to cap the upset for unranked Valencia. Garden Grove dropped to 8-1.

In nonleague volleyball:

No. 8 Santa Margarita 4, Santa Barbara San Marcos 0--Lauren Heri had 16 kills and Michelle Chambers had 14 in four games, 15-8, 15-17, 15-4, 15-9, for Santa Margarita (4-1).
