Running back Charles Lewis rushed for 278 yards and scored four touchdowns as Bellflower defeated Fullerton, 41-14, in a nonleague game Saturday night at Bellflower High School.

Lewis scored on runs of five, 95, and 63 for Bellflower (3-1). The 95-yard run set a school record. Lewis scored his first touchdown of the game on an 80-yard kickoff return midway through the first quarter.

The turning point of the game came on the last play of the first half, when Lewis outran the Indian secondary en route to a 95-yard touchdown run, propelling the Buccaneers to a 21-7 lead. The play was set up by an interception at the Buccaneer 3 by Lamar Willis.

“Our team was pumped and excited coming into this game,” said Lewis, who gained 358 total yards. “We felt that nobody was going to beat us tonight.”

Bellflower quarterback Eric Sessom completed only five of 12 passes, but tossed touchdowns passes of 47 and 75 yards to wide receiver Rob Scott.

The Indians (2-2) held a brief lead early in the first quarter after a seven-play, 70-yard scoring drive. Chad Staffieri scored from four yards and Fullerton led 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Lewis quickly tied the score with his 80-yard kickoff return.

The Indians’ only other score came on a nine-yard pass from quarterback Justin Bruce to Jeff Cody late in the third quarter.
