SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Woodbridge shut down one of the more explosive teams in Orange County Saturday night with a 10-0 victory over previously undefeated San Clemente in a nonleague game at Irvine High.

The Tritons, who scored 98 points in their first three games, were inside the Woodbridge 25 yard six times in the game, only to be denied each time.

“[Defensive coordinator] Kirk Harris developed a perfect defensive scheme and our players followed it to the T,” Woodbridge Head Coach Rick Gibson said.

The defense was tested repeatedly, especially in the first half, when three Woodbridge turnovers gave San Clemente opportunities to score.

Norman Pridgen intercepted a pass on the San Clemente 46 midway in the first quarter. The Tritons drove to the Woodbridge 25, where on fourth down and three, quarterback Oscar Montecinos was stopped by Eric Jensen for only two yards.

Two plays later, San Clemente regained the ball on a fumble recovery by Dennis van der Lijcke on the Woodbridge 30. Once again on fourth and three, San Clemente was stopped shy of a first down.

Woodbridge converted a fourth-down play at midfield on the next drive, which ended on a fumble recovery by Brandon Reed. San Clemente drove to the three, where Ryan Rommelfanger intercepted a pass in the end zone.

The Warriors put together an 80-yard drive in the third quarter. Scott Barlow hit Oren Masserman with a 21-yard touchdown pass and Jensen kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Shane Harris, averaging more than 100 yards per game for Woodbridge, injured his back early in the fourth quarter. He gained only 27 yards Saturday.
