Chapman Continues to Struggle

Howard Payne University scored 28 points in the first half and held off a late charge by Chapman for a 28-20 victory in a nonconference football game Saturday in Brownwood, Texas.

The Yellow Jackets (3-1) did most of their damage on the ground, gaining 298 yards. They also held the Panthers (0-4) to 75 yards on the ground, a reason Chapman trailed going into the fourth quarter, 28-3.

Early in the quarter, Dave Vaccaro caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Greg Hyland and Chapman trailed, 28-10.

Gabe Baltodano, a graduate of Liberty Christian, scored from a yard out with 5 minutes 4 seconds left as the Panthers trailed, 28-17.

Matt George kicked a 52-yard field goal. But Howard Payne ended the rally by recovering the Panthers’ onside kick.

With the scored tied in the first quarter, 3-3, running backs Damion Vallery and Cliff Hall went to work for Howard Payne.

Vallery scored on a 61-yard run to give Howard Payne a 9-3 lead. Vallery rushed 182 yards in 17 carries.

Hall scored touchdowns on runs of 42, three and 25 yards. Hall finished with 75 yards in 10 carries.

Baltodano led Chapman with 72 yards in 26 carries. Terry Noice caught five passes for 104 yards.
