City Might Have to Pay for New Water Pipes
- Share via
The city might be stuck with a $500,000 bill for new water pipes unless it can prove it was not the original owner of the pipes earlier this century.
The problem surfaced this week when the Public Works Department learned that the old, asbestos-laden water pipes would have to be replaced when Beach Boulevard is widened this winter.
The questions are: When were the pipes laid, and will the city or the county have to cover or share relocation costs? Records show the pipes were laid after Beach Boulevard became a state highway in 1933, said Public Works Director Donald K. Jensen.
The Orange County Transportation Authority will cover the costs until city officials complete their search for records.
