Anderson Back on Indian Roster

Share

Brian Anderson sprayed champagne on his teammates and celebrated like every other player in the Cleveland clubhouse after the Indians beat the New York Yankees on Monday night to clinch the division series championship.

“But I felt like a moron doing it,” said Anderson, the former Angel pitcher who was not activated for the first round of the playoffs. “I was happy for my teammates and for the organization, but I didn’t do anything to help out. At least now, I have a chance.”

With Baltimore’s lineup loaded with dangerous left-handed hitters and only one left-hander--Paul Assenmacher--in his bullpen, Cleveland Manager Mike Hargrove activated Anderson on Wednesday for the AL championship series. Utility infielder Enrique Wilson was taken off the roster.

Oriole right fielder Eric Davis began the league championship series on the bench Wednesday night, but not because he was 0 for 15 against the Indians this season and Geronimo Berroa hit .350 (seven for 20) with two homers against Cleveland.

Davis, who was found to have colon cancer in June and is undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatments, did not feel strong enough to play. Manager Davey Johnson started Berroa in right and Harold Baines, who hit .357 (five for 14) against the Indians, at designated hitter.

“I agonized a lot over it,” Johnson said. “I want him in right field behind [pitcher] Jimmy Key [tonight], and I want him opening up in Cleveland [for Game 3 Saturday]. I talked to him [Wednesday], and he didn’t think he could play at all.”
