Santa Margarita Sinks Corona del Mar in Water Polo

Santa Margarita recorded its first victory over Corona del Mar in Sea View League boys’ water polo Wednesday, beating the Sea Kings, 7-6, at Corona del Mar High.

Ahead, 7-4, with 2 minutes 20 seconds remaining, eighth-ranked Santa Margarita (14-5, 1-0) held off a last-minute scoring flurry by the 10th-ranked Sea Kings (3-4, 0-1), who scored two goals in the final two minutes.

“We redeemed ourselves after last year’s double-overtime loss,” Eagle Coach Rick Rowland said. “It felt really good, especially for our seniors.”

Chris Ansevin scored two goals for Santa Margarita, including a goal that tied the score, 4-4, in the third quarter. The Eagles then scored three straight goals to take the lead for good. Senior Andrew Jensen led Santa Margarita with four goals and Brett Weiss had eight saves.

In other Sea View League games:

El Toro 10, Irvine 7--Tim Craycrast scored three goals for the Chargers (8-6, 1-0) in their first league game. Drew Brees played goalie in the second half and had nine saves. The Vaqueros are 6-7, 0-1.

No. 4 Newport Harbor 17, Woodbridge 0--Kevin Becker scored six goals for host Newport Harbor (7-2, 1-0).

In the Century League:

No. 2 Foothill 24, Orange 7--Twelve players scored for Foothill and senior Todd Gray led the Knights with four goals. Matt Le Duc, Eitan Goldstein and Matt McPherson had three goals each for Foothill (8-2, 1-0). Paco Precidado scored four goals for Orange (7-7, 0-1).

No. 9 Villa Park 9, Canyon 3--Senior Kyle Baumgarner and Kurtis Meyer each scored three goals to lead Villa Park (10-7, 1-0).

In the Orange League:

Western 9, Valencia 3--Jace Crispin scored seven goals to help keep Western undefeated in league. Western improves to 9-1, 2-0.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 15, Fountain Valley 7--Garrett Cobb and Travis Vayssie each scored four goals to lead Esperanza (10-4, 1-0) to victory over Fountain Valley (5-3, 0-1). Brad Casuee led Fountain Valley with four goals.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Palos Verdes Peninsula 10, No. 3 Woodbridge 8--Susanna Lingman, the No. 1 singles player for Woodbridge (6-2) swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Palos Verdes Peninsula is the top-ranked team in Division I.

In Freeway League girls’ volleyball:

Sunny Hills 3, La Habra 0--With the help of the Nicholas sisters, Sunny Hills upset Division III-AA leader La Habra, 16-14, 15-9, 15-7.

Sophomore Stevie Nicholas had 14 kills and three blocks and sister Sunny, a senior, recorded 11 kills, four blocks and 12 assists for the Lancers. Sunny Hills is 5-3, 2-0. La Habra drops to 1-1 in league.

In the Golden West League:

No. 5 Ocean View 3, Saddleback 0--Jessica Brodosky had nine kills for Ocean View (4-1, 1-0) in its victory over Saddleback (1-5, 0-1).
