Chapman to Face Menlo, Margerum

Share

When Menlo’s football team visits Chapman Saturday, the Oaks will follow their new head coach, who is quite familiar with this area.

Ken Margerum, a former Fountain Valley High standout who played at Stanford and in the NFL, is Menlo’s first-year head coach. He succeeded former Dallas Cowboy tight end Doug Cosbie, now the offensive coordinator at California.

Margerum, who played with the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers and spent last season as the wide receivers coach at Hawaii, has kept some of Cosbie’s things in place.

Menlo (2-3) continues to use Bill Walsh’s West Coast-style offense that Cosbie installed last season, and the Oaks have averaged 25 points.

Menlo rolled up 487 total yards in a 41-7 victory over Occidental last week.

Running back Dan Nguyen (34 carries, 282 yards) has almost as many rushing yards as Chapman’s team (286).

Menlo quarterback Jon DeVille has completed 53% of his passes for 909 yards and seven touchdowns. Chapman (0-4) has scored only four touchdowns.

NFL scouts don’t usually flock to Chapman, but last week scouts from the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Giants made visits to check out kicker Matt George.

George has made all four of his field-goal attempts, including a 52-yarder last week at Howard Payne in Brownwood, Texas. He has kicked three field goals of 50 yards or longer during his career.
