Union Wants AL Presence in West

Even during the playoffs, the politics of baseball is never far away. There was Don Fehr, executive director of the players union, standing behind the batting cage in Baltimore early Thursday evening reiterating the union’s position on realignment.
“The players believe that the integrity of the leagues shouldn’t be destroyed and that the West Coast shouldn’t be left without an American League presence,” Fehr said.
“If the American League’s superstar players can’t get national exposure west of Minnesota, that’s not insignificant.”
Fehr referred to the possibility that the Angels, Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners will be moving to the National League.
He said the union has been kept abreast of the owners’ machinations and is hopeful of participating in a satisfactory resolution of the debate.
