Blocked Kick, Fumble Help Air Force Sink Navy, 10-7

Tim Curry recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown and made a game-saving fumble recovery with 1:02 left as No. 19 Air Force remained unbeaten with a 10-7 victory over Navy Saturday at Annapolis, Md.

Navy (2-3) was driving near the end of the game, but Curry recovered Chris McCoy’s fumble at the Air Force 42 to secure the victory.

Curry also recovered the ball in the Navy end zone after teammate Charlie Jackson blocked a punt with 10:13 left in the third quarter.

Air Force improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1985, when the Falcons started 10-0.

No. 23 Virginia Tech 17, Boston College 7--Ken Oxendine had a career-high 33 carries for 122 yards as the Hokies (5-1, 4-0) used a straight-ahead rushing attack to beat the Eagles (2-4, 2-2) in a Big East game at Blacksburg, Va. Of the 63 times Virginia Tech ran the ball, 52 were up the middle.

SOUTH

Shaun King passed for three touchdowns and ran 73 yards for another in amassing 387 yards as Tulane (3-2, 2-0) rolled to a 64-33 victory over Louisville (1-6, 0-2) in a Conference USA game at Louisville, Ky. Tulane also got a 62-yard touchdown return by Adam Morehead on an onside kick and a school record-tying five field goals by Brad Palazzo in scoring its most points since a 64-0 victory over Louisiana College in 1950. King completed 21 of 35 passes for 258 yards and rushed 14 times for 129 in leading Tulane. Louisville’s Chris Redman passed for a school-record 428 yards. He completed 34 of 57 passes but also had three intercepted. . . . Harold Shaw scored on a one-yard run with 6:34 to play and Tim Hardaway kicked three field goals as Southern Mississippi (4-2, 2-0) recorded a 23-13 victory over East Carolina (1-4, 0-1) at Greenville, N.C., spoiling the Pirates’ Conference USA debut. . . . Daunte Culpepper completed his first 15 pass attempts and threw for three touchdowns as Central Florida (3-4) rolled over Division I-AA Samford, 52-7, at Orlando, Fla. Culpepper threw for 309 yards in just three quarters and has thrown 100 straight passes without an interception. It was his sixth 300-yard passing game. . . . Gerard Arnold rushed for 119 yards and three scores as Memphis (2-4) recorded a 38-9 victory over visiting Arkansas State (2-4).

MIDWEST

Toledo quarterback Chris Wallace completed 21 of 31 passes for 190 yards and also ran for 44 yards in a 41-10 victory over Central Michigan in a Mid-American Conference game at Mount Pleasant, Mich. Dwayne Harris rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns in 23 carries for Toledo (5-0, 3-0). The Chippewas fell to 2-5, 1-3. . . . Randy Moss caught two first-quarter touchdown passes to lead Marshall (5-1, 2-0) to a 52-17 MAC victory over Akron (1-5, 0-4) at Huntington, W.Va. Moss has caught 16 touchdown passes in six games. . . . Sam Ricketts became the first player in Miami of Ohio history to amass 5,000 yards of offense and Travis Prentice rushed for three touchdowns as the RedHawks (5-1, 3-1) recorded a 62-26 MAC victory at Kent (1-5, 1-3). Ricketts, who completed 22 of 30 passes for 313 yards, has 5,167 yards of total offense in his career.

SOUTHWEST

Benji Wood ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns as Rice (4-2, 2-1) pulled off a 27-14 upset of No. 21 Brigham Young (3-2, 1-1) in the Western Athletic Conference game at Houston. The victory ended BYU’s 11-game WAC winning streak. The Owls gained 493 yards and held BYU to nine yards in the second half. . . . Texas El Paso (2-4, 1-2) ended an 11-game WAC losing streak with a 33-18 victory over Tulsa (0-5, 0-2) at Tulsa, Okla. UTEP, which had been averaging only 11.4 points per game, had 492 yards of total offense against the Golden Hurricanes, off to their worst start since 1957.

WEST

Graham Leigh completed 20 of 29 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two as New Mexico (6-0, 3-0) notched a 36-21 victory over San Diego State (1-5, 0-2) at San Diego. The Lobos are off to their best start ever. . . . Jon Denton threw two first-half touchdown passes and Nevada Las Vegas (3-3, 2-1) held off a Texas Christian rally for a 21-19 WAC victory at Las Vegas. Denton completed 17 of 36 passes for 246 yards against the Horned Frogs (0-5, 0-2). . . . Luke Johnson blocked a point-after kick early in the fourth quarter to save a 20-19 WAC victory for Southern Methodist (2-4, 1-2) over Utah (3-3, 2-2) at Salt Lake City. . . . Moses Moreno completed 13 of 20 passes for 183 yards and two scores to lead Colorado State (4-2, 2-1) to a 55-20 WAC victory over San Jose State (0-5, 0-2) at San Jose. . . . Wendell Montgomery caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Jay Stoner with 12 seconds left to give Wyoming (5-2) a 34-30 nonconference victory over Nevada (1-5) at Reno. After Montgomery scored, a Hail Mary pass by Nevada’s John Dutton was caught by Trevor Insley at the four-yard line, but Insley stumbled while trying to reach the end zone as time ran out. Dutton, coming back from a separated shoulder, completed 20 of 37 passes for 377 yards and two touchdowns. Stoner, making his first college start, was 16 for 31 for 312 yards and three touchdowns. . . . Quarterback Nate Sparks threw three second-quarter touchdown passes as Boise State (2-4, 1-1) rolled to a 52-10 Big West victory over New Mexico State (1-5, 0-1) at Boise, Ida.
