Day, Blevins Come Through for Quartz Hill

Senior Danielle Day finished first ahead of freshman Shell Blevins to help Quartz Hill High win the second Golden League girls’ cross-country meet of the season at Pelona Vista Park in Palmdale on Wednesday.

Day posted her fifth victory in six races this season with a time of 19:53 over the three-mile course and Blevins clocked 20:42 to help the Rebels defeat second-place Palmdale, 17-41, and third-place Highland, 19-42.

Quartz Hill, the No. 4-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I poll, defeated Lancaster, 17-42, and Littlerock, 15-50, in the meet that was scored as a series of dual meets.

The victories clinched the league title for the Rebels, who’ve won four of the five scoring meets they’ve run in.

Junior Carly Harrill was fourth in 21:20, freshmen Kim Harrill finished sixth at 22:07 and Jennifer Yadon was 10th in 24:03 for the Rebels.

Channel League Meet No. 2--Buena placed five runners among the top 12 finishers to easily win the meet at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

Cathy Dunne and Sarah Paine placed fourth and sixth to help the Bulldogs defeat runner-up San Marcos, 41-69.

Dunne clocked 21:31 over the three-mile course with Paine at 21:51.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Golden League Meet No. 2--Justin Patananan of Highland ran away from the field to win the meet at Pelona Vista Park in Palmdale.

Patananan, who won the first league meet by 71 seconds, had a 46-second margin of victory as he clocked 16:54 over the three-mile course.

Dan Cobian of Palmdale finished second in 17:40 to help the Falcons defeat second-place Lancaster, 25-30.

Palmdale also defeated third-place Littlerock, 25-30, fourth-place Highland, 22-34, and fifth-place Quartz Hill, 16-46, in the meet that was scored as a series of dual meets.

Because Palmdale finished second to Lancaster in the first Golden League meet of the season, those two teams will enter the league finals Nov. 5 tied for first.

Channel League Meet No. 2--Josh Spiker and Jared Willis finished fourth and fifth to pace Ventura to a 39-76 victory over second-place Rio Mesa in the meet at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

Spiker clocked 17:10 and Willis ran 17:17 over the three-mile course for the Cougars, who have won each of the first two league meets.

Jason Lanning of Buena won the race in 16:52 to help the Bulldogs finish third with 83 points.

Murphy 19, Bell-Jeff 44--Murphy’s Jay O’Campo won the Santa Fe League meet with a time of 17:23 at Griffith Park.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Chatsworth 4, Kennedy 3--The No. 3 doubles team of Tianna Maye and Tincy Stephen won a decisive set, 8-4, for the Chancellors (3-4, 2-2 in conference play) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 22, Alemany 3--Phillip Spartaru scored six goals for the Wolverines (14-1, 2-0) in a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake.

Ryan Peterson scored three goals for the Indians (6-8, 1-1).

Royal 18, Westlake 1--Jason Perry, Dave Radka and Ryan Apperson each scored four goals for the Highlanders (15-3, 3-0) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park High.

Burbank 21, Keppel 4--Peter Froelich scored seven goals, and Daniel Sandoval and Vaheh Setaghian each had five for the Bulldogs in an Almont League match at Burbank.

Malibu 13, Nordhoff 6--Justin Jewell had four goals and James Chadwick and Cory Gustafson each had one but the Rangers (8-6, 3-1) lost a Frontier League match at Malibu.

Loyola 7, Crespi 6--Mike Bucher scored three goals for the Celts, who lost the Mission League game at Pierce College. Evan Morris led Loyola with four goals.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

El Camino Real d. Birmingham, 15-12, 15-12, 15-3--Diane Rodriguez had five kills and eight aces for the Conquistadores (7-1, 4-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Birmingham.

Granada Hills d. Taft, 15-4, 15-10, 15-9--Michelle Ferrucci had 12 kills and Gina Karabogias had 31 assists for the Highlanders (7-1, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft (3-4, 1-3).

Crescenta Valley d. Glendale 15-10, 15-10, 15-8--Julia Pfeiffer had 16 assists and Joanna Lang served seven aces for the Falcons (8-3, 3-1) in a Pacific League match at Crescenta Valley.
