No. 4 Newport Harbor Edges Santa Margarita

Gary Conwell scored a minute into overtime to give No. 4 Newport Harbor a 9-8 victory over No. 9 Santa Margarita in Sea View League boys’ water polo Wednesday at Saddleback College.

Newport Harbor’s Jeff Leeper sent the game into overtime after scoring with 1 minute 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Newport Harbor is 10-3; Santa Margarita is 13-7.

In another league game:

Corona del Mar 12, Irvine 3--Jason Palda and Kawika Tarayoa each scored three goals to lead the Sea Kings (6-6, 1-1). Irvine is 7-11, 0-2.

In the Century League:

No. 3 Foothill 28, El Modena 4--Robby Arroyo scored seven goals and goalkeeper Jerrod Cuzens had 14 saves for Foothill (12-4, 2-0).

No. 8 Villa Park 20, Orange 3--Nick Pacelli scored seven goals and Kyle Baumgarner had five to lead Villa Park (12-7, 2-0). Paco Preciado scored all three goals for Orange (8-9, 0-2).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 9, Sunny Hills 7--La Habra took a 3-2 lead at halftime and held on for the victory. Nathan Allerd scored four goals and Jeremy Greenberg had two to lead La Habra (12-5, 2-0).

Sonora 12, Fullerton 7--Farhad Dadkho had 14 saves to help lead Sonora (10-4, 2-0). Jeremy Danny Windsor scored four goals and Jeremy Huntley added three for the Raiders. Gary Smedly led Fullerton with three goals.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 9, Tustin 8 (2 OT)--Lewis Gonzalez scored the winning goal a minute into sudden death overtime. Gonzalez, who had five goals in the game, scored on a backhand shot from three meters out. Daniel Noon had three goals for Saddleback (5-7, 2-0).

Nick Luebbers, who had three goals for Tustin, sent the game into overtime after scoring with 1:44 left in regulation play.

In the Sunset League:

No. 1 Los Alamitos 9, Esperanza 5--David Kong scored three goals to lead Los Alamitos (15-4, 2-0). Bryan Murphy and Tyler Wawrzynski each had two goals for the Griffins and Craig Alshin had seven saves. Travis Vayssie led Esperanza (12-6, 1-1) with three goals.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Loara 20, Kennedy 35--Juniors Jose Herrera, Issac Gallardo and Dustin Rhoads took first through third to lead Loara (1-3). Herrera won in 16:28, Gallardo was second in 17:16, and Rhoads third in 17:33.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 Newport Harbor 20, No. 5 Irvine 39--Curt Herberts and Claudio Cortes led the Sailors with second and third-place finishes for the upset victory. Herberts’ time was 16:17 and teammate Cortes finished in 16:57. Newport Harbor is 3-0. Matt Farrell finished first (16:52) for Irvine (2-1).

In the Sunset League:

No. 8 Edison 15, Huntington Beach 50--Andy Knutsen winning time of 17:40, helped keep Edison (3-0) undefeated.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

No. 3 El Modena 15, Villa Park 50--The Vanguards had seven runners tie for first place in a time of 21:12 over the three-mile Eisenhower Park course. El Modena is 4-0.

In the Empire League:

Kennedy 26, Loara 29--Marcela Infante won the race for Loara (0-3) in 21:43, but Kennedy (1-2) got the victory. It was led by Jessica Nolan (22:26) who finished second.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 Irvine 25, Newport Harbor 32--Alicia McFall of Newport Harbor led all runners with a time of 19:07. Irvine’s Melissa Livermore was second in a time of 19:20. The Vaqueros are 2-1.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 28, Huntington Beach 30--Freshman Kira Simon finished second (21:55) to lead Edison.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Esperanza 10, No. 8 Garden Grove 8--Esperanza (10-2, 3-1) upset visiting Garden Grove (11-2, 7-0). Kelly Six, the No. 1 singles player for Esperanza, swept her sets, 6-0, 6-4, 6-1.

Rosary 9, Brea Olinda 9 (Rosary wins on games 77-74)--Michelle Hamilton swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3, to help give Rosary (8-3) the edge.

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

No. 6 Ocean View 3, Tustin 0--Amy Knebel led the visiting Seahawks to victory over Tustin, 15-1, 15-3, 15-2. The Tillers are 2-6, 2-1. Ocean View is 6-1, 3-0.

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Mater Dei 3, Dana Hills 1--Amy DeCimes and Megan Sabo led the host Monarchs with 11 kills each as Mater Dei beat Dana Hills, 15-13, 15-6, 10-15, 15-2. Katie Rice had 35 assists for Mater Dei (10-1, 3-3).
