Corona del Mar Slips Past Newport

The top-ranked Corona del Mar girls’ tennis team had its toughest test of the season, defeating Newport Harbor on games, 84-78, in a Sea View League match Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Just as Brooke Taylor was defeating Corona del Mar’s Nadia Vaughan, 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker), the Sea Kings’ doubles team of Rushika Budhraja and Courtney Tennerelli were completing a 6-4 victory over Chelsea Godbey and Sarah Barker, leaving the teams tied at nine sets apiece.

The Sea Kings (10-0, 5-0) needed one-sided sweeps from Nina Vaughan and Caylan Leslie in singles to give them the margin in games.

Fifth-ranked Newport Harbor (11-4, 3-2) nearly got a sweep from its doubles team of Amanda Collopy and Erika Palmer, but they were edged by Budhraja and Tennerelli, 7-6 (7-5).

In another Sea View League match:

No. 3 Woodbridge 17, Irvine 1--Susanna Lingman, who has only lost three sets this season, swept in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for Woodbridge (7-3, 4-1).

In the Century League:

No. 4 Villa Park 14, Foothill 4--Katey Becker swept in singles for Villa Park, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0. Arpi Kojian didn’t lose a game for the Spartans (8-1, 3-0). Foothill is 8-2, 3-1.

In Freeway League girls’ tennis:

Troy 16, No. 10 La Habra 2--In a matchup of first-place teams, Troy (11-1, 5-0) was much better than La Habra (11-2, 4-1). Stacey Lee led the way for the Warriors with 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles, and Karen Corby and Cathy Zestal swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1.

In the Orange League:

Western 11 1/2, Magnolia 9 1/2--Rosanna Park and Kim Zengerle swept in singles and then teamed for a 6-2 victory in doubles for Western (4-8, 2-4).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 13, Aliso Niguel 5--Jessica Kritter won in singles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, for Laguna Hills (3-2 in league), ranked fourth in Division III.

In Century League boys’ cross-country:

Santa Ana Valley 19, Orange 44--Santa Ana Valley’s David Ojeda edged out Freddy Olmedo of Orange by one second in a dual-meet victory for the Falcons (4-0). Ojeda ran a time of 16:05 over three miles at Centennial Park. Orange falls to 2-2.

In the Freeway League:

No. 9 Sonora 19, Sunny Hills 36--Heriberto Sarabia finished first in 16:37 for Sonora on Clark Park’s three-mile course.

La Habra 26, Buena Park 29--Tony Cuen finished first (16:57) for La Habra, followed by teammate Tom Vigliotti in 17:00 on La Habra’s three-mile course. La Habra is 3-0.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove wins--The Argonauts beat Rancho Alamitos (21-34) and La Quinta (15-50), in a triangular meet at Mile Square Park. Rancho finished second, beating La Quinta, 15-50. Robert Ellis, a senior from La Quinta, finished first on the three-mile course in 15:36, more than a minute ahead of second-place finisher Chris Monachelli of Garden Grove (2-1).

In Freeway League girls’ cross-country:

Buena Park 23, La Habra 34--Heather Garritson finished first in 20:45 for Buena Park (3-0) on La Habra’s three-mile course.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 27, Valencia 28--Wendy Munua’s first-place finish helped Anaheim to victory. Munua won in 20:15. Valencia’s Jenette Patlan finished second in 21:07. Anaheim is 3-0 in league.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Newport Harbor 1, Marina 1--Kyle McNichols, returning to the team after a week away due to a pulled ligament, put Newport Harbor (5-1-3) up, 1-0, with a goal in the first minute of the game. Marina (5-1-4) tied the score, 1-1, with 4:23 left in the game, when the ball was deflected into the goal off two Newport Harbor players.

In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:

No. 3 Newport Harbor 3, No. 9 Corona del Mar 0--Jennifer Carey had eight kills and 33 assists in a 15-7, 15-7, 15-9 victory for Newport Harbor (7-1, 4-0). Corona del Mar is 6-4, 3-1.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 3, No. 10 Capistrano Valley 1--Bridget Beschen had 13 kills and Lara Smith had 11 for San Clemente (4-4, 4-0), which upset the Cougers, 7-15, 15-13, 15-13, 15-12. Capistrano Valley is 6-3, 2-2.

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Marina 3, Esperanza 0--Lindsay Phillips and Chanda McLeod each had 15 kills for Marina (8-1, 4-0), which won 15-6, 15-13, 15-9. Ashley Phillips added 35 assists and five blocks for the Vikings.

No. 5 Fountain Valley 3, No. 4 Huntington Beach 0--Kristen Deatherage and Natalie Snowden each had 10 kills for Fountain Valley, which won 15-9, 15-4, 15-2.

The Oilers (8-2, 2-2) were playing without senior outside hitter Lori Daedelow, who dislocated her shoulder in practice Wednesday.
