Cypress Beats No. 6 Cuesta in Wrestling
Cypress, ranked seventh in the state, defeated sixth-ranked Cuesta, 23-19, in Western State Conference wrestling Wednesday at Cypress College.
Key to Cypress’ victory were Ernesto Vargas, who defeated John Usilton at 158 pounds, 20-11, and Gerrardo Rodriquez, who pinned Jarred Trejo at 1 minute 51 seconds at 177 pounds.
Cypress improved to 4-3, 1-0. Cuesta is 2-4, 0-1.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:
Golden West 3, Irvine Valley 0--Golden West (13-0, 5-0), ranked first in the state, beat Irvine Valley, 15-3, 15-3, 15-3. Mariah Marquis led the Rustlers with 10 kills.
Orange Coast 3, Cypress 2--Jennifer Fish had 26 kills and Jennifer Marsh 24 in a 15-11, 10-15 12-15, 15-9, 15-13 victory for visiting Orange Coast (9-3, 4-1). Marisa Foasberg had 16 kills for Cypress (6-4, 2-3).
In men’s Orange Empire conference water polo:
Saddleback 13, Palomar 9--Jim Bray scored four goals to lead Saddleback (18-5, 5-1), which is ranked sixth in state and is in second place in conference.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo:
Orange Coast 9, Cypress 4--Orange Coast outscored Cypress, 3-0, in the final quarter to clinch the victory. Shakiba Fimbres led Orange Coast (18-5-1, 5-1) with two goals.
