Revelle Helps Garden Grove Win

Opponents usually have more offensive weapons than Garden Grove, but senior Matt Revelle did more than his fair share to make up the difference Friday night.

He caught a touchdown pass, threw one on an option play, recovered a fumble and had the longest run of the game as the host Argonauts upset Bolsa Grande, 32-15, in a Garden Grove League game.

The 32 points was not only a season high for Garden Grove (2-4-1, 1-1-1) but was only two points shy of what it had scored in the first six games combined.

Revelle’s third-quarter fumble recovery was the key play. He got the ball at his 19 when Bolsa Grande wide receiver Frank Angel was hit after a 23-yard gain. The play stopped what little Bolsa Grande had going in the second half.

Garden Grove’s first play lost two yards but Revelle took an end around and raced up the sideline for a 67-yard gain. He was stopped at the Bolsa Grande 17 and it took the Argonauts four more plays to pound it in.

The touchdown came on five-yard run by Jerry Coleman with 11:10 left in the game and put Garden Grove ahead, 25-7.

Garden Grove Coach Kris Van Hook called for an onside kick that worked when Andrew Romero covered a hooking kick at the Bolsa Grande 34.

Romero had a 26-yard gain on a draw play during a drive that was capped when quarterback Ricky Welty threw 13 yards to Ulysses Linares on second and goal. The touchdown put Garden Grove ahead, 32-7, with 7:56 left.

Welty started the Garden Grove scoring with a 35-yard pass to Revelle, who took the ball at about the 20 and found himself free to run to the end zone when two defenders collided.

Revelle put Garden Grove ahead, 18-7, when he took a pitch and threw 37 yards to Chad Zarndt with 1:27 left in the half.

“He’s a good athlete,” Van Hook said, “and does a lot of good things.”

Things had started well for Bolsa Grande which led, 7-0, after a 45-yard scoring pass from quarterback Doug Baughman to John Nguyen early in the game.

But that was about the last good news for Bolsa Grande, which turned the ball over four times and didn’t score again until the last play of the game.
