Oklahoma State Comes Up Short

Missouri brought No. 12 Oklahoma State’s remarkable run up the rankings to a stunning halt on Saturday.

The Tigers, after blowing a 30-7 lead in the second half, rallied in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the score and then won in two overtimes, 51-50.

When Missouri stopped Tony Lindsay’s scramble well short of the goal line on a two-point try in the second overtime, Oklahoma State had its first loss of the season and Missouri had one of its biggest victories in years.

The game included brilliant play by each quarterback and by Oklahoma State tight end Alonzo Mayes. Missouri’s Corby Jones threw four touchdown passes and ran for two scores, including a 15-yard keeper in the second overtime. Lindsay threw four touchdown passes and ran for one, while Mayes had eight catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a shoulder separation.

Missouri (5-3 overall, 3-2 in the Big 12) appeared doomed after Lindsay threw a nine-yard scoring pass to Mayes with 1:57 left in regulation, giving Oklahoma State a 37-30 lead.

The Tigers were held to 29 yards on five possessions after going ahead, 30-7, but drove 80 yards to score the tying touchdown--a 38-yard pass play from Jones to Ricky Ross with 18 seconds left.

In the first overtime, the Cowboys (6-1, 3-1) scored on Lindsay’s swing pass to Jamaal Fobbs on a third-and-6 play from the 21. Missouri countered with a one-yard run by Brock Olivo.

The Tigers got the ball first in the second overtime and Jones scored on his run around the left side. Lindsay then managed to stay inside the goal-line flag marker for a six-yard touchdown on a fourth and three, and Cowboy Coach Bob Simmons opted to go for two points.

Lindsay looked for a receiver and then tried to run it in, but was swarmed under by several Tigers.
