What: Kirk Gibson Week

Kirk Gibson’s game-winning home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, voted the No. 1 moment in the history of Los Angeles sports, is the focus of a weeklong Classic Sports Network series on the ’88 World Series beginning tonight at 5. On Tuesday, an interview Gibson recently did with Dick Schaap will be shown at 4:30 p.m., followed at 5 by a replay of Game 1.

The Gibson moment will be talked about as long there is baseball. Tom Lasorda, a guest host on the “Jim Rome Show” last week, spent a portion of Thursday’s show reliving the home run.

A bum right knee and a yet-unhealed left hamstring meant Gibson probably wouldn’t play against Oakland in at least Game 1 of the Series. The pain was so intense, he could barely take batting practice.

But when he heard Vin Scully, calling the Series for NBC, say in the bottom of the ninth that “Gibson is gone for the night,” he broke out of his ice pack and sent a bat boy to fetch Lasorda.

“I told him, ‘If you can get [Mike] Davis to hit for [Alfredo] Griffin, I can hit for the pitcher,’ ” Gibson said.

So out came Gibson, limp and all. After walking Davis, Dennis Eckersley worked the count on Gibson to 0 and 2, then Lasorda had Davis steal second.

“With the count 0-2, I figured they wouldn’t walk Gibson, even with first base open,” Lasorda said on radio the other day.

They didn’t, and now the Classic Sports Network has a moment it can turn into a one-week special. The homer truly was a classic moment.
