Divers from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department search and rescue team were at Lake Piru on Monday night searching for the body of a man who apparently drowned while swimming, authorities said.

Deputies received a call reporting a man drowning about 6 p.m., said Sgt. John Miller.

Witnesses said the man, believed to be in his early 20s, was in the swimming area of the lake when he became distressed. He called for a female companion to throw him a buoy, but she was not able to get the float to him, witnesses said.

The man was dog-paddling frantically before he disappeared, witnesses said.

The search was continuing late Monday evening, Miller said.
