Armored Car Crash on Freeway Injures 3

Three people suffered minor injuries in an early morning accident Tuesday that left an armored car overturned on the Orange Freeway and backed up commuters for hours, authorities said.

No money spilled from the armored car, but firefighters had to cut through a portion of heavy vehicle to free a guard trapped in the wreckage, according to Officer Bruce Mauldin of the California Highway Patrol.

The armored car for L.A. Federal Coin--a coin-wrapping and delivery company--apparently drifted out of its southbound lane about 6 a.m. and struck a Toyota before veering back sharply and striking an Oldsmobile in another lane, Mauldin said.

As the armored car flipped on its left side, the other two cars spun out of control and struck each other and the center divider, Mauldin said.

Both guards in the armored vehicle were injured, along with an occupant in one of the other cars.

No one was cited at the scene, but the accident remains under investigation, Mauldin said.
