Environmental Report on Retail Center Completed

A plan to build a discount retail store is moving closer to approval with the completion of a draft environmental impact report, a city planning official said this week.

The 18-acre lot on Washington Boulevard just east of Lincoln Boulevard will be the site of a 150,000-square-foot Costco store and other retail outlets pending approval by the Culver City Planning Commission in the next several months, said Philip Lee, associate city planner.

In the early 1990s, development of a 1-million-square-foot mall was approved for the site, but the project fell through when the owner could not secure major retailers as tenants, Lee said.

The new development would be about 240,000 square feet. Lee said PriceCostco is negotiating with Lucky stores and other businesses to locate there.

The period for public comment on the draft impact report continues until Sept. 15, Lee said. After all comments are addressed by city planners, there will be public hearings about details of the project.
