Baugh’s Hearing Is Postponed

A preliminary hearing to determine if Assemblyman Scott Baugh (R-Huntington Beach) should stand trial on alleged illegalities stemming from his 1995 election was delayed Tuesday until Sept. 16.

Baugh faces five felony perjury and 13 misdemeanor charges of campaign-law violations that allegedly occurred when former Assembly Speaker Doris Allen (R-Cypress) was recalled and replaced by Baugh. He has pleaded not guilty to misreporting campaign loans and contributions.

Defense attorney Alan Stokke said the preliminary hearing was rescheduled because co-counsel Ronald Brower is involved in a trial in Riverside County.

Nearly identical charges against Baugh were dismissed earlier this year by a Superior Court judge who ruled that the grand jury that indicted Baugh wasn’t provided with exonerating evidence by prosecutors. Prosecutors later refiled the charges.
