Wounded Driver Dies; Suspects Sought in Attack
A 20-year-old Pomona driver died Wednesday of gunshot wounds he suffered during a car-to-car shooting that led to a crash that left another man injured, authorities said.
Mandaryne Crawford died at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center shortly after the shooting about midnight Wednesday, police said.
He was driving east in 1100 block of East La Verne Avenue when an unidentified driver pulled alongside and began shooting, said Sgt. Ron McDonald.
“Crawford told his passengers he was shot,” McDonald said. “Crawford slumped over the seat and the vehicle went out of control. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a brick wall.”
Police said Crawford managed to crawl from the car before collapsing on the lawn of a home. Paramedics treated Crawford at the scene before taking him to the hospital, where he died.
Passenger Robert Didley, 22, of Pomona was hospitalized with foot, hand and facial injuries suffered in the crash, McDonald said.
The motive for the attack was unclear, McDonald said. There were no arrests and no description of the shooter’s vehicle, he said.
