Staffieri, Bruce Spark Fullerton
FULLERTON — Fullerton running back Chad Staffieri rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Justin Bruce threw two touchdown passes in a 33-21 victory over Whittier California Thursday at Fullerton District Stadium.
Staffieri scored on a 44-yard run on Fullerton’s second play from scrimmage. Three minutes later, Staffieri capped a four-play, 47-yard drive with a four-yard run and Fullerton led, 14-0.
Bruce, despite completing only nine of 19 attempts, connected for two third-quarter touchdowns passes to wide receiver Aaron Easton after the Condors had closed to 20-14 at halftime.
“We stuck it to them in the first quarter,” said Bruce. “In the second quarter we got shaky, but we held together and fought back in the second half.”
Fullerton (2-0) increased its lead to 20-0 early in the second quarter on Bill Gonzales’s one-yard run.
However, California (0-2) fought back, scoring two touchdowns in a 56-second span midway through the second quarter.
