Crossing Guard Struck by Car, Critically Hurt
A 65-year-old crossing guard was listed in critical condition Tuesday after being struck by a speeding driver near Orange Elementary School, authorities said.
Mary Bartleski was escorting children across Norwalk Boulevard at Orange Grove Street at 2:15 p.m. Monday when she was struck by a car driven by Remigio Garcia, 19, of La Habra, police said. Several cars stopped but Garcia drove around one of the vehicles and struck Bartleski, investigators said.
The crossing guard was air-lifted to Saint Francis Medical Center in Lynwood with massive head injuries. Garcia was questioned and released pending further investigation, said Whittier police spokesman Chuck Drylie.
A psychologist visited the school on Tuesday to counsel students and staff members.
