Sponsors Sought to Help Student Music Program

The owner of a Culver City music store is seeking sponsors for a program to provide instruments and music lessons for students whose families don’t have the credit needed to rent instruments.

Music stores countywide have reported shortages of instruments available to students, as school music programs have gained funding and popularity. The shortages are compounded by credit problems, said Candace Blankenship, owner of Delian Music Systems.

Blankenship, a supporter of music in Culver City schools, said many potential music students in Culver City, Los Angeles and Santa Monica school systems are unable to rent from music stores because they lack the credit requirements or cannot pay upfront costs for rental.

The fund she hopes to establish will allow businesses and individuals to sponsor a student’s instrument rental or rental and lessons for a year.

Blankenship said the planned fund will also aid “high-risk” youngsters enrolled in alternative education programs and work programs.
