A female motorist was dead and a man had turned himself in to authorities Wednesday night after a shooting on Beach Boulevard near the Los Angeles County line.

The man allegedly shot the woman about 6:15 p.m. as she was in her car on the east side of Beach, north of Rosecrans Avenue, police said.

Witnesses said the two motorists argued at the intersection of Hillsborough Drive, and the man opened fire on the woman’s car as they continued south on Beach.

The victim made a U-turn but the man kept after her and continued shooting, witnesses said.

A resident who asked not to be identified said he heard about six shots fired as the woman pulled over on Beach. He said he then saw a black pickup truck speeding from the scene.

La Palma police said they believe the gunman then drove about 10 miles from the shooting scene to turn himself in at their department. Police referred all other inquiries to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

It was unclear late Wednesday if the victim knew her alleged assailant, or what the two were arguing about, officials said. Authorities did not release the names of the victim and suspect.

The shooting occurred in a small unincorporated area between Buena Park and La Mirada. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were the first to arrive; they later turned the investigation over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies detoured all traffic from normally busy Beach Boulevard until late Wednesday.
