Park-and-Ride Site Underway in Encino for January Opening

Faced with severe overcrowding at a park-and-ride lot in Encino, the city has started construction on a second such lot scheduled to open in January, officials said Friday.

When finished, the lot on the southeast corner of Victory and Balboa boulevards will be able to hold 150 cars left by commuters who take public transit to work, mostly on three express buses that stop there, said Ken Bernstein, an aide to Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick.

The city began scouting locations for a second park-and-ride lot in Encino after the first one, at Hayvenhurst Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard, began to overflow with cars, some of which had to be tandem-parked.

“That park-and-ride has been overburdened for quite some time,” Bernstein said.

Planners picked the new site as the best place for commuters coming from the northern San Fernando Valley, Bernstein said. The land is owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
