Football draws millions of people each fall to watch their favorite teams. Present-day football started in 1874, when a team from McGill University in Montreal visited Harvard University. The Canadians wanted to play rugby, which permitted running with the ball and tackling. Harvard wanted a soccer-like game. So they played one game of each. Harvard liked McGill’s rules so much that it introduced them to other Eastern colleges. Running and tackling soon became part of the U.S. game.
