Mellinger Is Difference for Oxnard

Kevin Mellinger capped a big day at the plate with a ninth-inning home run to lift Oxnard College to a 7-6 victory over Bakersfield in a Western State Conference interdivision baseball game Thursday at Oxnard.

Mellinger’s leadoff home run was his third of the season and fourth extra-base hit of the game. Mellinger, a former Royal High standout, had three doubles and scored three runs. He was four for five.

Freshman right-hander Mattalimier Buckroy (4-0) went the distance, striking out three.

In other baseball games:

Canyons 11, Santa Barbara 6--David Soto had four hits and three runs batted in for Canyons in a WSC interdivision game at Santa Barbara.

Chris Coash hit a grand slam in the third inning to give Canyons (16-8, 8-7) an 8-0 lead.

Craig Hennes, Ryan Dunn and Kris Yeaman had two hits each for Canyons.

Freshman pitcher Mike Preski (4-1) pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits to Santa Barbara (2-18, 1-13).

Glendale 3, Moorpark 2--Freddy Sanchez hit a one-out, two-run home run on an 0-2 pitch in the top of the eighth to give Glendale (19-8, 10-3) its final margin of victory in a Western State Conference interdivision game at Moorpark.

Sanchez and John Campanella each had two hits for Glendale, which has won 10 consecutive games.

Zack Gordan homered for Moorpark (5-8, 8-17).

SOFTBALL

Canyons 10, Pierce 0--Andrea Wintermute hit a three-run double in the third inning of a WSC South Division game at Canyons (6-10, 2-2).

Wintermute, who also had a run-scoring sacrifice fly, finished with four RBIs and one hit.

Pierce fell to 9-9, 3-3.

MEN’S GOLF

Cal Lutheran 288, La Verne 317--Led by Clint Elsemore’s three-under-par 68 and Trevor Coates’ one-over 72, host Cal Lutheran finished four-over-par in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Sunset Hills Country Club.
