Hawaii-Hilo Throws One Northridge’s Way

It was lucky 13 for Cal State Northridge.

The Matadors beat Hawaii-Hilo, 7-2, on Thursday at Northridge for their 13th consecutive baseball victory.

Chris McMillan scored the go-ahead run from third base in the fifth inning when Tyler Yates (2-3) threw the ball away in an effort to keep Adrian Mendoza close to first base.

Mendoza hit a three-run home run off Kahola Rickard to cap a four-run rally in the sixth.

Tim Bell (3-0) pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out three.

Darren Dyt doubled and scored twice for Northridge (25-17).

Scott Wallis doubled and homered for Hilo (13-29).

The Master’s 2, Westmont 0--Freshman Matt Berry (6-2) lost his bid for a no-hitter with two out in the ninth inning at Westmont (11-15).

Berry gave up a single to Erik Lewis but recorded his ninth strikeout to end the game. He walked two and hit a batter.

Master’s (25-7) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Chris Kollmann drove in Aaron Penberthy with a two-out double. The Mustangs scored in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Luke Kollmann.

The Kollmann brothers each had two hits for the Mustangs.

Cypress 9, Canyons 4--The Cougars suffered their third consecutive loss in the Hancock tournament, with Jeremy Shields (6-1) being tagged with the defeat.

Shawn Larkin and Brandon Smith each had four hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs for Cypress.

Albert Palma and Jesse Daggett each had two hits for Canyons (18-11).

Relief pitcher Wayne Mahaffey of Canyons retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced during his 3 1/3 innings in the tournament.

SOFTBALL

Canyons 3, Valley 1--Lupe Flores had two RBIs and scored a run in a three-run third inning for the Cougars (8-11, 4-3) in a Western State Conference South Division victory at Canyons.

Sandra Cisneros hit a run-scoring double in the sixth inning for Valley (15-7, 7-2).

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 6, Nevada Las Vegas 1--The Waves (20-5), ranked 10th in the nation, won five of six singles matches and also claimed the doubles point at Pepperdine.

Robert Lindstedt, Brad Sceney, Eni Ghidirmic, Kelly Gullett and Anthony Ross won for the Waves (20-5) in the Nos. 2-6 singles slots. The doubles teams of Gullett and Lindstedt and Ghidirmic and Michael Jessup also won.
