A man driving a stolen Ford Mustang was killed Saturday night when he ran a red light and was broadsided by a Jeep Wrangler, Los Angeles police said.

The impact crumpled the driver’s side of the Mustang and instantly killed Michael Paul Lowry, 31, police said.

The 1969 Mustang had been reported stolen from North Hollywood on March 5. After the accident, police found several stolen video cassette recorders and cameras in the back seat of the Mustang.

There was no indication that Lowry was fleeing a crime scene when he was killed, police said.

The driver of the 1988 Jeep suffered cuts to his face and complained of abdominal pain. He was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for treatment.

Lowry was heading southbound on Petit Avenue about 6 p.m. when he ran the light at Nordhoff Street and was hit by the westbound Jeep, police said.

The force of the collision drove the Mustang into a third vehicle, a Volvo, that was heading eastbound on Nordhoff. All five of the Volvo’s occupants were wearing seat belts and none sustained injuries, LAPD Officer P. Jordan said.

Coroners officials said Lowry was carrying a South Carolina driver’s license, which listed a home address in Walterboro. He had been staying with his fiance in Van Nuys, authorities said.
