Robbery Suspect Keeps Police at Bay for Hours

After police interrupted an attempted robbery at a grocery store, a man fled into a nearby residential area, where he took a family of four hostage and held a SWAT team at bay for more than three hours Saturday evening, police said.

Edward Carmona, 32, of Garden Grove, surrendered about 8:20 p.m., and there were no injuries, police spokesman Lt. Robert Burnett said.

Burnett said police responded to a call of a robbery at the Orange Farm Market on Westminster Boulevard about 4:15 p.m. When Carmona saw police outside, he tried to leave with a hostage, then let the man go and began jumping fences as police chased him, Burnett said.

Armed with a handgun, Carmona then forced his way into a house in the 13900 block of Jasperson Way, where he held an elderly couple, a man about 40 and a 12-year-old boy hostage, Burnett said.

The Westminster SWAT team negotiated for several hours until Carmona surrendered, he said.
