Fullerton Needs Rally to Top Aggies

Chris Beck’s single in the eighth inning helped Cal State Fullerton rally past New Mexico State, 8-5, Saturday at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces.

Marco Hanlon pitched two innings of no-hit relief and was credited with the victory for the Titans (31-12, 16-4).

Adam Johnson limited the Aggies (19-21, 4-13) to one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief to pick up his fourth save.

Greg Jacobs and Aaron Rowand hit consecutive homers in the third inning for Fullerton. It was Jacob’s fifth and Rowand’s 11th of the season.

In Big West Conference softball:

CS Fullerton 11-10, Utah State 2-2 (6, mercy)--Nikki Hart doubled and scored three times for Cal State Fullerton (24-23, 10-12) in the first game of a doubleheader.

Fullerton sophomore Christy Sears had a pinch-hit three-run homer in the six inning.

Chrissy Hartman (7-6) limited Utah State to two runs on five hits through six innings.

In the second game, Donna Coombes (10-7) gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out three for Cal State Fullerton.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 3-3, Cal Baptist 1-2--Gretchen Brandt pitched a three-hitter for SCC (39-7, 9-1) in the first game of a doubleheader.

Brandt (19-4) struck out seven and walked six for the Vanguards.

Teammate Michelle Murie tripled twice and drove in the game-tying run in the fifth. Brandt added two RBI singles.

In the second game, Erin Gomez knocked in the game-winning run on a ground out in the top of the ninth for the Vanguards.

Teammate Valerie Irwin was three for four and drove in two runs. Brandt, who earned her second victory of the day in relief, gave up one run on one hit in four innings and struck out three.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 6-3, Claremont Mudd-Scripps 2-1--Jessamine Maiben hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning for Chapman (27-6) in the first game of a doubleheader. Teammate Jenni Bankus hit two doubles.

Catie Lacy pitched six innings in the second game, giving up three hits and a walk to improve her record to 10-1.
