Shearer Displays Mettle for Alemany

It may be cluttered at the top of the Mission League golf standings, but Alemany High made it Krystal clear it is the team to beat with a 188-202 victory over St. Francis Thursday in a nine-hole match at Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge.

Alemany sophomore Krystal Shearer, who said before the match that she would shoot even-par, made good on her promise and tied Daniel Imm of St. Francis with her high school career-best round of 35.

It was the first time Shearer, one of the top girl golfers in Southern California, was medalist in a high school match.

“I knew everyone had to have a good score today,” Shearer said. “I just went after every pin.”

Shearer, playing in the final group, made a birdie on the par-four first hole, made seven consecutive pars and missed a nerve-racking, six-foot putt for par with the ninth green surrounded by players and coaches from both teams.

“I was nervous for her,” Alemany Coach Jim Bonds said. “I didn’t want to say anything to her and mess up her round.”

The Indians (10-2, 10-1 in league play) had to beat St. Francis (14-3, 8-1) to stay in first place.

Robbie Clemente shot 36, Anthony Harju had a 38 and Brian Woolf, who recently signed with Arizona, was at 39 for Alemany.

Bonds said he was nervous after his team shot 202 at Porter Valley and barely defeated Chaminade on Tuesday.

“This was a big match for us,” Bonds said. “I’m real proud of the way everybody clutched up.”
