Buffalo Daughter is an all-female Japanese trio that has assimilated U.S. rock and pop cultural ephemera and spat it out again in appealingly mutant form.

On its fourth album (and second for a U.S. label), the band revels in unlikely juxtapositions: a dissonant guitar riff drones over a James Brown-like backbeat on “Autobacs,” “Socks, Drugs, and Rock and Roll” is a slice of woozy New Wave and “Super Blooper” grafts pulsing synth bleats onto twisted surf music.

This collection may be all over the map, but it coheres surprisingly well, primarily because Buffalo Daughter has both the wit and the chops to pull it all off with panache.
