100 Sheep to Lead Way to ’98 Fair

Here come the sheep, the dogs and, yes, the bagpipes.
A “Sheep Drive” down Fairview Road this summer will feature 100 head of sheep and three yapping border collies scurrying toward a pen with a bagpipe troupe following behind. This is the Orange County Fair’s first sheep drive on a public street, though a cattle drive advertised the 1994 fair.
The idea was proposed in February to residents and City Hall by fair officials. Since then, fair representatives have met with residents, hosted community forums and applied for municipal permits.
On July 17, dogs will herd the sheep down a mile-long course that begins at Orange Coast College and ends at the fairgrounds’ Princeton Gate 45 minutes later. Parts of Fairview will be closed to traffic.
Two animal handlers who specialize in training border collies will stage the drive.
The Orange County Fair takes place July 10-26.
