Van Nuys Air Show

Share

The heavy-handed, police-state approach used by the Van Nuys Airport police to drive away signature gatherers from the recent air show should come as no surprise (“Valley Group to Probe Petition Ban at Airport,” July 21). Residents who have attended airport meetings know full well that the Van Nuys Airport management is bent on stifling criticism and minimizing complaints. At every hearing on airport noise, low-flying helicopters or jets, the [airport] police force is always out in full force.

The recent air show incident is most regrettable and an affront to every resident of this city. It is wrong to force residents off of public airport property simply because they carry petitions or wear T-shirts with messages unsatisfactory to the [airport] management.

It is time to end the heavy-handed, police-state tactics employed by Van Nuys Airport management and its police force. A housecleaning of the airport management and the mayor’s hand-picked Board of Airport Commissioners is in order.
