Collectors to Enforce 60-Pound Trash Limit

Share

Garbage collectors this month will start enforcing a 26-year-old city law that limits the amount of trash per container to 60 pounds.

Rainbow Disposal will no longer pick up the new generation of super-sized trash containers after Aug. 15, city spokesman Robert Kinsler said.

Residents who own the large tubs will find warning tags on them during the next week or so.

In 1972, the city passed a law limiting trash containers to 32 gallons and their full weight to 60 pounds.

Kinsler said the issue had not come up until recently, when retailers began selling the 60- to 90-gallon tubs.

The problem is that Rainbow employees have to manually lift the containers, which can weigh more than 100 pounds when full, he said.
