Man Pleads Guilty in Texas Murder of Ex-CSUN Student
A 22-year-old Texas man pleaded guilty Tuesday to capital murder in the slaying of a television reporter who studied broadcast journalism at Cal State Northridge and worked for the Associated Press in Los Angeles before moving to that state.
Anthony Gary Silvestri, of Temple, Texas, opted to plead guilty in order to obtain a life sentence rather than risk drawing the death penalty if the case went to trial, according to Texas officials.
Kathryn Dettman, 36, worked for KWTX-TV of Waco-Temple-Killeen at the time of her killing Jan. 22.
Dettman, who had family in Wisconsin, attended Santa Barbara Community College and UCLA before enrolling at CSUN as a graduate journalism student from 1989 to 1991.
Later she worked for the AP in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., before taking a television reporting job with KWTX-TV in Waco.
