Kapler Sets Southern League Record

Outfielder Gabe Kapler, who played at Taft High and Moorpark College, set a Southern League record for runs batted in when he hit a three-run home run in the first inning Tuesday night against double-A Carolina.

Kapler has 134 RBIs, breaking the record of 132 set by Terry Steinbach of Huntsville in 1986 and equaled by Mike Coolbaugh of Huntsville last season.

Kapler, 23, a 57th-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 1995, hit his 26th home run for Jacksonville.

Catcher Robert Fick, from Cal State Northridge, hit two home runs Monday and has 103 RBIs for Jacksonville.

JETHAWKS

Designated hitter Brendan Kingman, who leads the league with a .340 average, first baseman Cirilo Cruz and second baseman Adonis Harrison of Lancaster were selected to the California League all-star team.

Right-hander Brad Penny of High Desert was selected most valuable player and pitcher of the year. Catcher Giuseppe Chiaramonte of San Jose was selected rookie of the year and Don Wakamatsu of High Desert was chosen manager of the year.

The Jethawks lost to the San Bernardino Stampede, 5-0, in a California League game at San Bernardino on Tuesday.

Brendan Kingman had two hits and Jason Regan had a hit and drew his 101st walk for Lancaster (34-31).

The Pacific Suns lost, 8-3, to the Mission Viejo Vigilantes in a Western League game at Oxnard College.

Pacific’s Rafael Ozuna hit a home run off former teammate Tim Davidson in the first inning. Davidson is 3-0 with Mission Viejo since being traded Aug. 8.
