Joe Marquez; Soldier and Boxing Coach

Joe Prieto Marquez, who had the discipline of a soldier and the will of a fighter, died Wednesday after a long illness. He was 76.

Born in Los Angeles on July 26, 1922, the Santa Paula resident joined the Army when he was 20.

His 20-year military career spanned the globe.

Marquez, who parlayed his mastery of self-control into a career in boxing, trained a team of amateur boxers who competed in championships in Germany in 1950.

He later brought Santa Paula resident Lupe Aquino to the world boxing championships.

Marquez is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elpidia Marquez, and three daughters: Stella Marquez, Sylvia Guzman and Mrs. Kevin Fink.

Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Stetler Chapel in Santa Paula.

The family asks that contributions be made in lieu of flowers to Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Assn. at 1996 Eastman Ave., No. 101, Ventura, 93003.
