Ortiz Rings Up Unanimous Four-Round Victory
The crowd was sparse but firmly in Victor Ortiz’s corner Saturday night at L.A. Fitness Center.
Ortiz, a cruiserweight from Simi Valley, won a four-round victory by unanimous decision over Ruben Reyna of Bakersfield before a crowd of about 300 in the first boxing program in Warner Center in more than two years.
In his first fight since December, Ortiz appeared sluggish after he backed Reyna into a corner and dropped him to one knee with a short right 30 seconds into the bout.
“Soon as I tagged him in the first round I knew I had him,” said Ortiz (3-0).
The 10-round main event between Nick Martinez of Bassett and Augustin Renteria of Fontana for the vacant California middleweight title was still in progress at press time.
Israel Corea (4-1) of Oxnard scored a four-round decision over Mario Sanchez of Northridge.
In a four-round flyweight bout, Jorge Gonzalez (5-0) of Canoga Park registered a unanimous decision over Danny Rizzo.
