City Council to Discuss Raises Before Election

Share

Voters will find out before the City Council election whether council members favor giving themselves pay hikes.

Council members have agreed to discuss possible raises on Feb. 22, two weeks before the municipal election. The decision comes after critics charged the council with trying to avoid a vote on pay hikes before the election.

Last month, Pasadena voters by a slim margin approved an initiative allowing the council to decide its pay. Measure O also requires a citizens committee to suggest compensation levels.

That citizen committee will begin work on Jan. 4, and give its report in February.

City Councilman Paul Little, who is seeking reelection in March, and Councilman William Paparian, who wants to become Pasadena’s first elected mayor, crafted the timetable, saying the public had the right to know where elected officials stood on the issue.

Council members now earn $50 for each City Council meeting and $50 for each redevelopment agency meeting.
