Patterson Helps No. 5 Edison Defeat No. 2 San Clemente

Christina Patterson scored 17 points and held all-county forward Colleen Turnbull to four as Edison beat second-ranked San Clemente, 51-50, Thursday at the Woodbridge Tip-Off Classic.

Edison (2-0), ranked fifth in The Times Orange County girls’ basketball preseason ranking, made six of 10 field goals in the fourth quarter after making only 11 of 48 through the first three. Michelle Zylstra contributed 13 points and 14 rebounds, and freshman Bianca Ziemann (nine points) made four of five free throws in the fourth quarter.

San Clemente (1-1) committed three fouls on three-point attempts, and Edison made six of the nine accompanying free throws.

The final lead change came with 6 1/2 minutes remaining and gave Edison a 38-37 advantage, and Edison led 50-45 with 2:06 to go. Briana Stephenson’s three-pointer with nine seconds left cut San Clemente’s deficit to one. Debby Caine scored 17 for the Tritons.

In the Fullerton Tip-Off Classic:

Loara 50, Western 34--Carrie Banister had 17 points and nine rebounds to help Loara (2-0) advance to tonight’s semifinal against Garden Grove.

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson tournament:

El Dorado 94, Whittier Christian 17--Courtney Smith scored 19 of her 24 points in the first half for El Dorado (2-0).

In a nonleague game:

Capistrano Valley Christian 51, Ontario Christian 47 (OT)--Melissa Sands had 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Eagles (2-0).

In the National Sports Grill boys’ basketball tournament:

La Quinta 70, Servite 47--Chris Smith scored 27 points for La Quinta (2-1) in a consolation game. Servite is 1-2.

In the Orangewood Tip-Off Classic:

Orangewood Academy 82, San Gabriel 71--Starly Alvarado had 35 points and 13 rebounds and Bobby Cunningham scored 24 points for host Orangewood (3-1).

Washington, D.C., Pope Paul VI 64, Century 53--Mike Zepeda had 31 points and 10 rebounds for visiting Century (1-1).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Westminster 0, Long Beach Millikan 0--Senior goalkeeper James Daniels, who had 15 saves, stopped a shot on a breakaway in the 87th minute to preserve the tie for visiting Westminster (1-0-1).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Brethren Christian 5, Woodcrest Christian 0--Julie Cape scored three goals for visiting Brethren Christian (1-1).

Corona del Mar 7, Estancia 0--Freshman forward Allison Harvey scored three goals, helping lead Corona del Mar (3-0) to its third consecutive shutout.

Huntington Beach 9, Long Beach Wilson 1--Sophomore Nikki Saenz scored three goals to lead visiting Huntington Beach (1-0).

Katella 3, Western 2--Mandy Watanabe scored two goals to help Katella (1-1) rally. Tiffany Chong gave Western a 2-1 lead early in the second half.

La Habra 5, Garden Grove 1--Shauna Dinnen had two goals and one assist for host La Habra (1-0-1).

Loara 9, Bolsa Grande 0--Anna Medina scored three goals and her sister Betty scored once for host Loara (2-0).

Pacifica 5, Marina 1--Pacifica’s Sarah Moranville scored two goals in the first five minutes and later assisted on Diana De Augustine’s goal in the second half.

Valencia 9, Buena Park 1--Alejandra Nunez scored three goals for host Valencia (2-0).

In the El Dorado girls’ water polo tournament:

Marina 6, Santa Barbara San Marcos 3--Marissa Nelson scored three goals and Cara Chlebicki had two goals and six steals for Marina in the second-round game. The Vikings, who play Bell Gardens in a quarterfinal today at 5:30 p.m., won their first-round game, 17-6, over Alhambra Keppel.

In pool play at the El Nino Cup tournament at Heritage Park in Irvine:

Capistrano Valley 13, Redlands 8--Ashley Stachowski scored 11 goals as Capistrano Valley (2-1) advanced to Saturday’s semifinals. She also scored five goals in a 15-6 victory over Lakewood. Redlands is 2-1.
