A moderate earthquake jolted the San Francisco Bay Area about 4:16 a.m. Friday, waking people, setting off car alarms and toppling bottles from shelves, but causing no injuries or serious damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, on the north segment of the Hayward fault, hit a magnitude of 4.1. The epicenter was about four miles northwest of Berkeley and about 10 miles northeast of San Francisco.

The last major quake on the Hayward fault was farther south near Fremont in 1868.

Rail service was briefly halted from Richmond, but was quickly restored. Delays of up to an hour were reported after the temblor with trains traveling at reduced speeds while engineers checked for damaged tracks in the Berkeley Hills and in the tube under San Francisco Bay.

U.S. Geological Survey spokeswoman Pat Jorgenson said the quake awakened her in her Menlo Park apartment, but she wasn’t alarmed. “We live in California,” she said.
