A Costa Mesa man suspected in a series of bank robberies has been arrested in a pool hall at UC Irvine, police said Thursday.

Man Huy Cao, 25, was booked at Orange County Jail in connection with four robberies, from Nov. 12 through Dec. 8. The targets were Wells Fargo branches in Irvine and Bank of America branches in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach, Irvine Police Detective Mike Hamel said.

In each case, Cao--who is not a UC Irvine student--is believed to have approached a bank teller and presented a note demanding money, Hamel said. In at least one of the banks, police said, the suspect displayed what was described as a semiautomatic handgun.

Police said they found Cao in the campus pool hall late Wednesday based on information provided by a witness. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered evidence related to the robberies, authorities said.
