Big 4th Quarter Gives Savanna Championship

Four Savanna players scored in double figures to lead the Rebels to a 64-56 victory over Whittier La Serna in the championship game of the Darren Oliver Classic boys’ basketball tournament Saturday night at Fullerton High.

Allan Purnell scored 16 points, Chris Hudson scored 12, Marcus Butler 11 and Solomon Brown 10 for Savanna (6-2).

Savanna held a 30-28 halftime lead before falling behind, 43-41, at the end of the third quarter.

But the Rebels outscored La Serna, 23-10, in the fourth quarter.

In another Darren Oliver Classic game:

Bolsa Grande 69, Torrance 52--In his second game back after an ankle sprain that kept him out of five games, Jon James had 25 points and 14 rebounds for the Matadors in the fifth-place game.

James made nine of 11 free throws. Reserve Steve Jenks had nine points and four rebounds.

In the Century tournament:

San Clemente 65, Corona del Mar 62--Mitchell Pierce scored 21 to lead San Clemente in the championship game.

Pierce was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Joe Tatala had 10 for San Clemente.

Dennis Alshuler scored 13 and Brandon Crosby 11 for Corona del Mar.

Alshuler, Crosby, and Tatala were named to the all-tournament team.

Estancia 65, Valencia 59--Brett Valbuena scored 21 to lead Estancia in the third-place victory over the Los Angeles-county school.

Estancia’s Jason Simco, who scored three points, was named to the all-tournament team.

In the Jason Ferguson tournament:

Foothill 61, Buena Park 49--Tournament most valuable player Drew Buford had eight points and nine assists for the Knights in the title game at Costa Mesa High. Alex Rasmussen made three late free throws to put away the game for Foothill, which led by 21 points at the half.

Marina 73, Los Amigos 62--In a game that featured 61 free throws and four players fouling out, junior forward Dustin Kaatz scored 16 points and senior guard Scott Rivera had 14 points to lead Marina (6-3) to the third-place victory.

Marina guard Beau Brown had 12 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Costa Mesa 71, Westminster 53--Nate Jones scored 30 points to lead Costa Mesa (1-5) in a consolation game. Jones, who made 13 of 14 free throws, also had 10 rebounds.

Saddleback 43, Mission Viejo 38--Saddleback had three players score in double figures, including all-tournament selection Terrell Foster (10 points).

In the La Quinta tournament:

Loara 67, La Quinta 59--A strong second-quarter effort helped Loara defeat host La Quinta in the championship game. Tournament MVP Herbert Gracia had 30 points for Loara, including three three-point baskets, and five assists. Ben Fredrickson and Chris Smith each had 18 points for La Quinta.

Laguna Beach 73, Santa Ana Valley 57--Kurt Beimfohr scored 29 and Travis Hanour 17 for Laguna Beach (6-2) in the third-place game.
