Marlins Trade Renteria to Cardinals
The Florida Marlins traded 1997 World Series hero Edgar Renteria to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night, leaving them with only five players from their championship team.
The Marlins acquired minor-league pitchers Braden Looper--the third pick overall in the 1996 amateur draft--and Armando Almanza, and shortstop Pablo Ozuna.
Renteria drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 7 with a two-out single off Cleveland’s Charles Nagy. The 23-year-old shortstop hit .282 with three home runs and 31 runs batted in and stole 41 bases last year.
Marlin General Manager Dave Dombrowski said Renteria--the team’s lone representative in last year’s All-Star game--was traded because of the development of young shortstop Alex Gonzalez.
Only pitchers Livan Hernandez, Alex Fernandez and Antonio Alfonseca, infielder Craig Counsell and outfielder Cliff Floyd remain from the Marlins’ championship team.
