Councilwoman to Head National Latino Group
A city councilwoman has been chosen to lead a national Latino organization of elected officials.
During a Kansas City conference earlier this month, Jenny Oropeza was elected president of the Hispanic Elected Officials.
Oropeza, 41, a Long Beach council member for the last five years, was elected to a one-year term.
The organization mentors and holds workshops for new Latino officials and encourages participation in the National League of Cities.
Over the past few years, Oropeza said, members of the group “have provided our community’s insight to the NLC on such issues as the education of Hispanic youth, immigration reform, the North American Free Trade Agreement, bilingual education, voting rights and minority business enterprise programs.”
